Trees, Shrubs, Evergreens and Rose Bushes
Cole’s has an amazing selection of woody ornamental plants. Even seasoned gardeners will find plants they have not heard of. For the less experienced, our knowledgeable staff can direct you to the shrub or tree to best suit your planting needs. Getting the right plant with regard to size and site requirements will minimize problems down the road and increase the time you have to enjoy the plant.
Once you have made your selections be sure to follow proper planting procedures.
1) Dig a hole about twice as wide and as deep as the root ball.
2) Soak root ball before planting.
3) Remove the plant from the pot. If the roots are particularly dense, break them up a little. Dense root balls reject water and this often leads to the plant drying out even though you are watering it.
4) Place root ball in planting hole and back fill with a mixture of the original earth and a good quality soil amendment (Triple Mix, Top soil).
5) Never plant deeper than the plant was in its original pot.
6) Water in using a transplant fertilizer to stimulate root
development.
7) The first year water regularly and look for signs of wilt.
Plants most often fail the first year because they are not getting enough water. Even drought tolerant plants need regular watering the first year. Drought tolerance improves once the plant is established.
